What will I learn?
To see photographically this ground-breaking workshop uses a mnemonic: A – Attraction B – Background C – Composition D – Depth of field E – Exposure F – Focus G – Gently press the shutter.
- Discover an excellent blueprint for photographic advancement.
- Understand and use the ABC of camerawork method of seeing.
- Acquire significant feedback on each of the days’ shoots with individual reviews.
Andy will help you discover how to see photographically through the ABC of CameraWork Method. You will have opportunities to pre-visualise your pictures artistically and technically before you press the shutter release.
Before the Workshop
The Workshop Manual
As a signed-up participant of my workshops you are offered one free copy of the ABC of CameraWork Manual. The ABC Manual will be sent to you shortly after you sign up for the workshop.
The purpose of reading the manual before the workshop is to familiarise yourself with the ideas to be put into practice. The tutorials and skill embedding exercises are based on the manual.
It is also highly recommended that you use the manual as a point of reference to enhance your photographic seeing ability. It must be said that the aim of the workshop is not to cover every aspect of how to see photographically discussed in the manual.
Artistic Awareness Survey
Each workshop participant will have their own reasons for signing up and aspects of photography they wish to learn or improve. The Artistic Awareness Survey will help you work out what you do and do not know. Follow this link to find your skills gaps.
Individual Seeing Photographically Workshop Objectives
It will be good for you to think about what insights the Artistic Awareness Survey reveals to you and what you want to get from the workshop. Each participant will need to enhance different aspect of seeing, so have a plan that best suits your needs. You will get far more out of the workshop if you have objectives to be achieved.
Warm Up Exercise
Before the workshop think about the role of the photographer and share it with the group. Try to hone your thoughts into three bullet points.
1 The LGE Programme Introduction
Learn > Grow > Express (LGE) is a three-part learning programme. Working with the three modules, you will gradually add skills and practices to your photography, with emphasis on the word gradually.
The LGE Programme will heighten your sense of achievement by developing your ability to take and make individual photographs.
Participants are encouraged to use the LGE programme as a means to a designated outcome. For example you may wish to create an exhibition, a book, or apply for a distinction.
On the how to see photographically workshop we will be setting objectives and reviewing your results based around:
2.1 Picture Templates
A series of articles has been written to provide ways of thinking about the themes noted above.

4 Picture Taking
The base for the how to see photographically workshop is located in the Alpujarras part of the Sierra Nevada mountains, about a two hour drive east from Malaga along the Trans-Mediterranean Highway. This starting point gives a very wide variety of picture taking opportunities. The location for the workshop is a bonus not the reason for going there.
Show > Do > Review
As an example, you will have the opportunity to take the following picture types: landscape, seascape, industrial, portraiture, dance, night and street photography . This workshop is not dedicated just to landscapes.
The preparation work you did before the workshop will help you decide what aspects of the ABC of camerawork you want to work on. Andy will offer suggestions about suitable subject matter and compositions to start you off. You will be deciding your practice objectives and whether you have reached them or not after constructive feedback.
5 Participant Picture Reviews
As a vital part of the learning and growing process Andy will give you feedback on your pictures as you take them. Andy may suggest alternative ways to see photographically to ensure you fully understand how to get the effect you’re trying to achieve.
All of us see pictures differently and we can learn from each other by sharing the pictures we have taken. We all see things in our own way and passing around cameras is a good method to pick up the vision and style of others.
It is important to say that this is not a competition and you are on the workshop to learn and update skills. Saying that, it will not all be work, we will have lots of fun along the way.

Testimonial from a previous participant of the “How To See Photographically” Workshop
“The workshop in Spain was structured so that based on guidelines, we set our own agenda each day and discussed the day’s work in the evening and the immediate feedback provided an opportunity to build on what I had learnt. This was my first experience of a workshop in the style and found it excellent working in this way. Thank you, Andy.”
