I had never heard of the Image Circle group of photographers and didn’t know anything about the exhibition either, but popped into the Oxmarket yesterday on the off chance, with my wife and a couple of friends, and was pleasantly surprised to find this photography exhibition. I was particularly impressed by Alan Frost’s monochrome images taken mainly around Chichester Harbour, an area I know quite well (but evidently not as well as Alan!) Two things stood out about his photography to me, one was the interesting angle he had found to photograph places that are familiar to many local people, for example his shot of the harbour with Bosham church in the background was taken from a totally different and very interesting location, unlike any I have seen before, away from the classic shot of the village that we’ve all taken! And secondly the evenness and consistency of his photos, which seemed partly due to the way he has processed them but also most of them seemed to have been taken on overcast, dull, grey days when most of us don’t even think of going out with the camera! Oh and I also liked the square format he has used throughout. Not sure if these were all digital or medium-format darkroom but I found them very inspirational.
Hi Pete thank you for your accurate assessment of Alan’s ability to find the extraordinary within the familiar. 18 months of dog walking in all seasons and lights has paid off handsomely. I had the pleasure of spending a day with Alan around Chichester Harbour and local knowledge was the key to potential excellent pictures. I am sure Alan will be delighted with your comments when I pass them on to him.
